Five Million and Counting

November 13, 2017 by Fiction Editor Beth Hill
last modified November 13, 2017

My thanks to you all; the Editor’s Blog hit a pretty big number today—five million page views. I’m so glad that you’ve been able to use the blog to find answers for your writing and fiction needs.

By far, the most accessed article is Punctuation in Dialogue. It passed Format Your Novel for Submission several years ago and isn’t slowing down.

While many of the most accessed articles deal with writing mechanics, it seems that the articles that generate the most discussion have to do with style or encouragement for writers. You’re always welcome to share your insights and questions; we’ve had some great discussions.

There’s plenty of info for all sorts of writing needs, so if you haven’t, I hope you’ll explore the site. There are a handful of ways to search for what you’re looking for, but you can always check out an alphabetical list of articles in the archives. You’ll find information on punctuation (there’s a lot on commas), the fiction elements—point of view, characters, dialogue, plot, etc.—writing for the reader, and encouragement for writers.

Again, my thanks. Way back when, I never imagined the blog would reach so many. Thanks for letting me talk about words and writing, two of my greatest loves.

I hope you’re busily writing, busily editing, or busily thinking about writing today.

  1. Congratulations, Beth! You work so hard, and you deliver excellent advice — so you deserve this! Even though I’m an experienced editor, I still refer to your blog for fiction techniques. And I refer my authors here all the time.

    Beth,
Congratulations on so many views. Your book and PDF on punctuation I printed off is in my suitcase with my second manuscript. I’m headed to the Forgotten Coast of Florida for my annual birthday getaway. Three weeks with only the dogs. Your blog is essential to improving my writing.
And might I add, your blog is so easy to read without those obnoxious advertisements. I hope you can continue to produce a blog ad free.
I️ I️ I️ I leave you with iOS 11’s latest quirk. When using the letter “I” you have to manually select the letter from the prompt below the screen. There’s a way to correct it, but it’s several steps.
    Happy writing.

  3. Cheers and Congratulations Beth! Many of us have no doubt looked at other writer-advise blogs, but yours by far, stands out. Your advise writing style is light, yet very deep and very thorough…not an easy feat. We fledglings do so much appreciate you. I, for one, have become dependent on you. Please keep on keeping on!

    • Thanks so much, Carol. I do plan on keeping on. And I’m smiling at the “very thorough.” I admit that I can easily get carried away, but I do want to be thorough. Blog articles that just tease at the surface of an issue seem pointless. Lists do have their place, of course. But going deeper with issues can be a much bigger help.

Thank you Beth. You are so generous with all you share. I REALLY appreciate it. Congratulations on the 5 million views!

That post deserves top billing. I’ve used it often.

    Congratulations.

  6. Thanks. It does get a lot of views. Yesterday it was seen over 650 times. I guess a lot of people are working on dialogue.

  7. Phil H says:

I wonder why people are so scared of dialogue. But then from experience I know that less than four percent of the population can play a musical instrument. And music and dialogue are in the same food group. to me, anyway. Your advice has helped me along other routes. Get characters uncomfortable was by far the one that just whacked me up side the head. I had a pacifist muso kick a glamour boy’s butt for smacking a girl, something no one in the book saw coming. Down to you and my one of the 5 million. Thanks for all you do, and the altruistic way you deliver it.
